Exchange gearboxes must be complete, with differential, speedo housing and contents, obviously the condition of the contents is of lesser importance but damaged gears and synchro hubs will incur a £10 reduction in exchange value per item. Additionally the case must be servicable, ie. there is no excessive wear on the idler bearing surface, all threads must be intact and sound, including sump plug, and no cracks in the casing. A minor level of damage to the exterior of the case is expected, as long as is does not affect the structural integrity.
Helicoils can be used to repair damaged threads in non-critical locations, however, these will be charged for ( £10 per 5/16 UNC coil, £25 for Sump plug ) thus reducing the surrender value of an exchange box. Damaged 3/8 UNC ( diff housing bolts ) will be considered as unservicable, as will damage to the 3rd motion double roller retainer threads.
A common practice to avoid the need for an exchange gearbox is the supply of a gearbox for reconditioning. I will then strip, check and recondition your gearbox to the level you specify and return that same gearbox back to yourself.
